How to Paint a Front Door (Curb Appeal in a Weekend)

A fresh front door color is the cheapest, highest-impact curb-appeal upgrade you can make. A $40 can of paint and a Saturday turns a tired entry into the neighborhood standout. Here’s how to do it right so it lasts.

Step 1: Pick the Right Paint

Exterior doors take abuse — sun, rain, handprints. Use a high-quality exterior paint (Sherwin-Williams Duration, Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior) in satin or semi-gloss. Flat sheen on a door shows every scuff.

Step 2: Remove Hardware (or Mask Tight)

Take off the knob, deadbolt, and kick plate if you can. If not, mask meticulously with painter’s tape. Pros remove — it’s faster than perfect taping.

Step 3: Clean and Sand

Wash with TSP to remove grime and oils. Scuff-sand the old finish with 220-grit so new paint grips. Bare wood or metal spots get a coat of primer first.

Step 4: Prime Bare Areas

Any raw wood or metal needs primer (oil-based for metal, stain-blocking for wood). Skip this and you’ll get uneven absorption and rust bleed-through.

Step 5: Paint in the Right Order

Lay the door flat if you can — fewer drips. Paint panels first (inset, then raised), then rails (horizontal), then stiles (vertical). Two thin coats, light sand between.

Step 6: Don’t Forget the Frame

A painted door against a dingy frame looks unfinished. Freshen the trim and jamb too.

Pro Color Tips

  • Classic: glossy black, navy, or deep red — timeless.
  • Bold: teal, forest green, or mustard — on-trend for 2026.
  • Match the undertone of your brick or siding.
