Deck Staining vs Painting: Which Lasts Longer?

Your deck takes more weather abuse than any other surface on your home. Omaha’s freeze-thaw cycles are brutal on wood. The stain-vs-paint debate comes down to one question: do you want to show off the wood or protect it? Here’s the honest comparison.

Stain: Let the Wood Breathe

Stain penetrates the wood and tints it. Two types:

  • Transparent: Shows full grain, least protection, lasts 1–2 years.
  • Semi-transparent: Some grain, moderate protection, 2–3 years.
  • Solid: Looks like paint, best UV protection, 3–5 years.

Pros: Doesn’t peel — it wears away evenly. Easy to refresh (just clean and re-coat). Shows natural wood.

Cons: Needs more frequent reapplication than paint.

Paint: Maximum Color, Maximum Protection

Paint sits on top and forms a film.

Pros: Huge color range. Most UV protection. Hides weathered, gray wood completely.

Cons: Peels. When moisture gets under paint film, it blisters and you’re scraping. On a horizontal deck surface, paint fails faster than stain.

The Verdict for Decks

For horizontal deck boards, stain wins almost every time — paint peels on flat surfaces where water pools. For railings and posts (vertical), paint or solid stain both work and last longer.

Prep Is Everything Either Way

Whether you stain or paint:

  1. Clean with a deck cleaner or pressure wash (low PSI — high tears wood)
  2. Let dry 48+ hours
  3. Sand rough spots
  4. Apply with brush or pad, not a roller (rollers leave puddles)
