Peeling paint is the most common exterior problem I see in Omaha homes. And here is the thing most homeowners get wrong — they repaint over it without digging into why it peeled in the first place. That is like putting new shingles over a rotting roof. The problem will come back, usually worse.
The Four Reasons Paint Peels
1. Moisture Under the Film
This is the #1 cause in Nebraska homes. Moisture gets behind the paint film — from condensation, irrigation spraying the walls, or water wicking through unsealed cracks in the siding.
Signs: Peeling starts at the bottom edge of clapboards, near where gutters drip, or around windows where caulk has cracked.
Fix: Find and eliminate the moisture source. Re-caulk windows. Redirect downspouts away from walls. Let the wall dry thoroughly before repainting.
2. Oil-Based Paint on Top of Latex (Or Vice Versa)
If your home was painted at different times, there is a good chance someone applied oil-based paint over latex or vice versa. These two chemistries do not bond well to each other. The new coat lifts the old one.
Fix: Scrape all loose paint down to bare wood where you see adhesion failure. If the old coat feels chalky when you rub your hand on it, that is adhesion failure — scrape it back. Prime with a bonding primer and repaint with compatible paint.
3. Skipping Primer on Bare Wood
Omaha siding — cedar, pine, fiber cement — needs a primer coat before topcoat. Bare wood absorbs the topcoat unevenly, causing the finish to peel in patches.
Fix: Scrape to bare wood, prime with shellac-based primer (Zinsser B-I-N) or oil-based primer (Kilz Original), let dry fully, then apply two coats of exterior paint.
4. Paint Simply Aged Out
Even the best exterior paint has a lifespan — typically 7–15 years on the north and east sides of a house, 15–20 years on the south and west sides where UV is more intense.
If your house is 20+ years old with the original paint, full scraping to bare wood and a fresh start is the right approach.

- Scrape all loose and peeling paint
- Sand rough edges smooth (120-grit, then 220-grit)
- Prime bare wood areas
- Caulk all gaps around windows, doors, and trim
- Apply two coats of quality exterior paint (Sherwin-Williams Duration or Benjamin Moore Aura)
