You probably do not think about your exterior siding until something obviously goes wrong. By then, the damage can be significant and much more expensive to fix. Learning to read the warning signs of siding that needs repainting can save you thousands of dollars and prevent structural problems down the line.
The Five Warning Signs
1. Alligator Cracking
This looks like a web of tiny cracks across the paint surface — like the skin of an alligator. It happens when the paint film has lost its flexibility and is breaking apart. This is usually the first sign that the paint is aging and will soon begin to peel.
What to do: Scrape, prime, and repaint the affected areas before the paint starts peeling. Alligator cracking means the paint is at the end of its life.
2. Peeling or Flaking
Paint that is curling away from the surface — anywhere from small flakes to large strips. Peeling paint on exterior siding is almost always caused by moisture getting behind the paint film.
What to do: Scrape all loose paint, find the moisture source, repair, then repaint. See peeling paint article for full steps.
3. Chalking
When you rub the wall with your hand and a white powder comes off on your fingers, that is chalking. It is the pigment binder breaking down from UV exposure. Some chalking is normal for exterior paint after a few years — heavy chalking means the paint is failing.
What to do: Pressure wash the walls (low PSI), let dry, apply a prime coat, and repaint. If the surface is chalking badly, a new paint system applied over the chalked surface will not hold — you need a full scrape-and-repaint.
4. Fading or Discoloration
If the color looks washed out compared to shaded areas or trim that was recently repainted, UV degradation has faded the paint. Faded paint does not protect the siding as well — it lets more UV through to the substrate.
What to do: A fresh coat can restore the color, but only if the underlying surface is sound. If the siding is chalking underneath, you need primer.
5. Warping or Buckling
Wood siding that is blistering, cupping, or buckling has absorbed significant moisture. This is serious — the wood is expanding and contracting and could be rotting underneath.
What to do: Replace the damaged boards. Do not paint over warped siding because you will only see the shape through the new paint layer.
The Age Rule
If your home has never been repainted and is 15+ years old, assume it is due. Most exterior paint systems last 7–15 years depending on the surface, sun exposure, and climate. Omaha’s freeze-thaw cycles are hard on exterior paint.
