You rub the exterior wall and your hand comes away covered in white powder. You think you are just dirty. It is not dirt — it is chalking, and it means the paint is dying.
What Chalking Actually Is
Chalking happens when the binder (the glue that holds the pigment together) in exterior paint breaks down from UV exposure. The pigment becomes loose and appears as a fine white or gray powder on the surface.
A small amount of chalking on exterior paint after a few years is normal and does not necessarily mean the paint is failing. Heavy chalking — where your hand turns white every time you touch the wall — means the paint is degrading and will soon start peeling.
When Chalking Means You Need to Repaint
The Rub Test: Rub the wall firmly with a white cloth or white glove. If the cloth shows significant color transfer, the paint is chalking badly and needs attention.
If less than 30% of the wall is chalking: You can clean the surface, prime, and repaint the affected areas.
If more than 30% of the wall is chalking: You need a full scrape-and-repaint. The paint system has reached end of life. A spot repair will look patchy and will fail again quickly.
How to Fix Chalking Before Repainting
- Pressure wash the walls on low PSI (1200–1500 PSI max). High PSI will damage wood siding.
- Let walls dry completely — at least 48 hours in Omaha humidity.
- Apply a high-quality primer designed for chalked surfaces (Zinsser Cover Stain or a chalk-blocking primer)
- Apply two topcoats of quality exterior paint (Sherwin-Williams Duration or Benjamin Moore Aura)
Why Not Just Paint Over Chalking?
If you apply new paint over chalking without priming first, the new paint will absorb the chalk and look chalky itself within a year. The chalk contaminates the adhesion and color. You will see the old chalk show through the new finish.
Primer creates a sealed barrier between the chalking surface and the new paint.
Preventing Chalking in the Future
Quality paints with UV inhibitors and high-quality acrylic resins resist chalking far longer than budget paints. Benjamin Moore Aura and Sherwin-Williams Duration both contain advanced UV protection that slows chalking significantly.
In Omaha, a properly applied quality exterior paint system should last 10–15 years before significant chalking appears again.
