Walk down the exterior paint aisle and you will see brands claiming their product lasts “15 years,” “20 years,” even “lifetime.” These are marketing claims, not warranties — and the reality is more nuanced.
I have used most major exterior paint brands on Omaha homes over the years. Here is my honest assessment of what actually lasts.
The Top Tier (What I Use Most)
Sherwin-Williams Duration
- Acrylic latex formula
- Self-priming on previously painted surfaces
- Outstanding adhesion and flexibility — handles Omaha freeze-thaw cycles well
- 10+ year lifespan on well-prepped surfaces
- Available in a wide color range
Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior
- Premium acrylic latex
- Exceptional color retention
- Highly resistant to fading and chalking
- Good in both heat and cold
- 10–15 year lifespan
- The downside is price — about 20% more than Duration per gallon
Pittsburgh Paints PPG Diamond
- Good mid-range option
- Solid durability for the price point
- Widely available in Omaha hardware stores
- 7–10 year lifespan with proper prep
The Mid-Range
Sherwin-Williams Emerald
- High-quality interior/exterior hybrid
- Excellent for trim and doors as well as walls
- Good durability but slightly less UV resistance than Duration
- 8–12 year lifespan on exterior walls
Behr Marquee
- Widely available at Home Depot
- Decent quality for the price
- Requires primer on bare surfaces (not truly self-priming despite claims)
- 5–8 year lifespan
What to Avoid
I will not name specific budget brands, but if the paint is under $30/gallon for exterior latex, it will likely need repainting within 3–5 years. Cheap paint has lower solids content, less pigment, and fewer binders — it washes out faster.
The Omaha Factor
Nebraska’s climate is hard on exterior paint — we swing from -20°F in winter to 100°F+ in summer, and humidity spikes in July and August. Paints with high flexibility (ability to expand and contract with temperature) outperform rigid formulas here.
Sherwin-Williams Duration and Benjamin Moore Aura both have excellent flexibility ratings. These are the two I recommend most to Omaha homeowners.
Primer Still Matters More Than Topcoat
No matter what brand you choose for the topcoat, you cannot skip primer on bare wood, new siding, or surfaces that have chalked badly. A good primer (Zinsser B-I-N or Kilz Original for bare wood; a quality acrylic primer for primed surfaces) gives the topcoat something to grip and dramatically extends its lifespan.
