The difference between a DIY paint job and a professional one shows up at the edges. Sloppy trim lines scream “amateur.” Crisp ones make the whole room look intentional. Here’s how to get sharp lines without losing your mind.
Prep Is 80% of the Result
Before a drop of paint touches trim:
- Clean it. Baseboards collect dust and grime. Wipe with TSP or a degreaser.
- Caulk the gaps. Run a thin bead of paintable caulk where trim meets wall or floor. Smooth with a wet finger. This hides the inevitable imperfections and gives a seamless look.
- Fill nail holes with spackle or wood filler, sand smooth.
- Sand lightly with 220-grit to scuff the surface so paint adheres.
Tool Up Right
- A 2”–2.5” angled sash brush (Purdy or Wooster) is the trim standard. The angle gives you control in corners.
- For long straight runs of baseboard, a small foam roller (4”) speeds things up — roll the flat, brush the detail.
The Cutting-In Technique
- Don’t overload the brush. Dip only 1/3 of the bristles.
- Start a half-inch from the edge, then pull toward it — this avoids a paint blob at the corner.
- Use the bristles’ natural flex to guide a line; let the brush do the work.
- Keep a wet edge so sections blend.
Painter’s Tape Done Properly
Tape is a crutch, not a guarantee. Use it right:
- Apply frog tape (blue or green) to the wall side, not the trim.
- Press the edge firmly with a putty knife so paint can’t wick under.
- Remove tape while paint is still wet — pulling dry paint cracks the line.
Two Thin Coats Beat One Thick
Thick paint on trim drips and sags. Two thin coats with light sanding (220-grit, between) between them gives a furniture-smooth finish.
When to Call a Pro
