You finished painting the living room wall and stepped back to admire your work. Instead of a smooth, even finish, you see roller marks, streaks, and areas where the color looks uneven. That wall does not look smooth — it looks streaky.
Streaky walls happen to the best of us. The good news is the fix is almost always the same: identify which of these four causes is responsible, and address it.
Cause 1: The Roller Was Too Dry
A roller that does not have enough paint on it stipples the wall instead of smoothing it. You can see the pattern — tiny dots overlapping where the roller missed.
Fix: Load the roller properly. Dip about one-third of the nap into the paint tray, and roll it across the tray ramp to distribute evenly. You should see a uniform coat of paint on the roller surface — not dripping, but definitely saturated.
Cause 2: The Paint Dried Before the Next Section
This is the lap mark problem. If you stop rolling mid-wall and start a new section after the paint has started to dry, the new wet paint will not blend with the dry section. You will see a visible ridge.
Fix: Work fast and work in sections you can finish. Paint the entire wall or ceiling area in one go. If you have to stop, stop at a corner or door frame where the edge will be hidden.
Cause 3: You Used the Wrong Roller Nap
A roller with too thick a nap leaves an orange-peel texture. A roller with too thin a nap does not hold enough paint and stipples.
Fix: Use a 3/8-inch nap for most interior walls. If the wall has a light texture, try 1/2-inch nap. For smooth, previously painted walls, 1/4-inch gives the smoothest finish.
Cause 4: Cheap Paint
Budget paints have lower solids content and less binder. They roll out thinner and dry faster, making it harder to maintain a wet edge and harder to get uniform coverage. The pigment in cheap paint is also less finely ground, which shows up as streakiness.
Fix: Use a quality paint like Sherwin-Williams Duration or Benjamin Moore Aura for interior walls. Better coverage in fewer coats.
