Popcorn Ceiling Removal: A Complete DIY Guide

That bumpy ceiling went up in the ’70s and ’80s to hide imperfections and dampen sound. Today it reads “outdated” and traps dust. Removing it is messy but very doable. Here’s the full playbook — including a safety step people skip.

⚠️ Test for Asbestos/Lead First

Homes built before 1980 may have asbestos in the texture; pre-1978 may have lead in the paint layer. Buy a $30 test kit (or hire a lab) before you scrape. If either is present, stop and call a pro — DIY removal is a health hazard and often illegal to DIY.

What You’ll Need

  • Garden pump sprayer
  • Wide drywall knife (12”)
  • Plastic sheeting + painter’s tape
  • Safety glasses, dust mask (N95+), hat
  • Joint compound + sandpaper for refinish

Step 1: Protect Everything

Popcorn gets everywhere. Cover floors and walls with plastic. Move furniture out. Seal doorways with plastic and tape. Wear a shower cap — you’ll thank me.

Step 2: Wet and Wait

Spray a 4x4 section with water until damp (not soaked). Wait 10–15 min. The texture softens and releases. Dry scraping is 10x dustier and harder.

Step 3: Scrape

Hold the knife at a low angle and push. The wet texture should slide off in sheets. Re-wet as needed. Don’t gouge the drywall paper underneath.

Step 4: Refinish

Scraping leaves a rough surface. Skim-coat with joint compound (one or two thin layers), sand smooth (220-grit), and prime. Most DIYers stop at “smooth enough” — pros skim to glass.

Step 5: Paint

Use a flat or matte ceiling paint. A 3/4” nap roller helps hide minor imperfections.
