Walk into any paint aisle and you will see at least seven shades of the same white, each with a different word next to it — matte, flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, high-gloss, patent. Most people grab what looks clean and move on. That is how you end up scrubbing eggshell walls like they are gloss kitchen cabinets six months later.
Here is what each sheen actually means, where it works best, and what you should use on the walls of your living room versus your kitchen and bathroom.
What Sheen Actually Is
Paint sheen is the amount of light the dried finish reflects. More binder, more shine. The pigment (the color part) stays the same — the binder-to-pigment ratio is what changes.
Think of it like a floor: matte floors show every scuff but hide imperfections. Gloss floors show every shine and make the room feel brighter but highlight every bump in the subfloor. Paint works the same way on a wall.
The Sheen Scale, From Lowest to Highest
Flat / Matte (0–5% gloss)
- What it looks like: A soft, velvety finish that absorbs light
- Hides: Imperfections, dry wall seams, texture variations — better than any other sheen
- Hates: Scrubbing — once a mark gets on it, you cannot easily clean it
- Best rooms: Ceilings, adult bedrooms, low-traffic hallways
Eggshell (10–25% gloss)
- What it looks like: A faint, soft glow — the word “eggshell” means exactly this, the surface of an egg
- Hides: Most imperfections, still very forgiving
- Cleans: Lightly — you can wipe a crumb or a pencil mark with a damp cloth
- Best rooms: Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms (the sweet spot for most walls)
Satin (25–35% gloss)
- What it looks like: A smooth, pearl-like finish with visible light reflection
- Hides: Moderate — you start to see texture now
- Cleans: Well — scrubbing is fine
- Best rooms: Kitchens, bathrooms, kids’ rooms, hallways, doors and trim
Semi-Gloss (35–70% gloss)
- What it looks like: Noticeably shiny, reflects a clear light source
- Hides: Almost none — every wall imperfection shows
- Cleans: Scrub as hard as you want
- Best rooms: Bathrooms, trim, doors, cabinets, exterior (on trim and siding)
Gloss / High-Gloss (70%+ gloss)
- What it looks like: Like a lacquered surface
- Hides: Nothing — you see every brush stroke
- Cleans: The easiest of all finishes
- Best rooms: Cabinet doors, accent pieces, bathroom fixtures
The Omaha Climate Factor
Nebraska summers bring 95°F humidity and winters bring dry heated air. In high-humidity rooms (bathrooms, kitchens), a higher sheen helps the paint resist moisture. In bedrooms, lower sheen feels cozier and more forgiving of seasonal wall movement.
What I Actually Recommend
A typical home mix:
- Walls: Eggshell for livings rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms
- Kitchen and bath walls: Satin
- Trim, doors, cabinets: Semi-gloss
- Ceilings: Flat or matte (flat is cheaper and you never see it anyway)
The One Mistake That Costs Money
Using a high-sheen paint on large wall areas means you will see every roller stipple, every touch-up, every patch. Most DIYers reach for semi-gloss because it looks “professional” in the store — and then spend twice as much on touch-ups and re-coats. Eggshell on walls is the workhorse finish. It looks good, it lasts, and it is forgiving.
