How to Fix Drywall Holes and Cracks Before Painting

That hole above the doorframe is from the handle. That crack running along the ceiling corner appeared last winter and got worse every spring. These are the small drywall issues that turn a weekend paint job into a half-day repair marathon — unless you know how to fix them properly first.

I have done thousands of drywall repairs as part of painting projects. Here is exactly how I approach each type, from the smallest nail pop to the most frustrating crack.

Nail Pops and Small Holes (Up to a Quarter)

These are the most common wall defects and the easiest to fix.

What you need: Lightweight spackling compound, a 2-inch putty knife, 150-grit sandpaper, damp cloth

Steps:

1. Push spackle into the hole or indent at an angle with the putty knife
2. Scrape flat — slightly below the wall surface
3. Let dry 1–2 hours
4. Sand smooth with 150-grit, then finish with 220-grit
5. Wipe dust with damp cloth
6. Prime and paint

Do not use heavy body spackle for these — it shrinks as it dries and you will need three coats. Lightweight compound stays put and sands easily.

Cracks Along Seams or Corners

These are trickier because they usually indicate movement — temperature changes, house settling, or vibration from a door being slammed.

What you need: Self-adjoint fiberglass mesh tape, lightweight compound, 4-inch putty knife, 120-grit and 220-grit sandpaper

Steps:

1. Widen the crack just slightly with a utility knife — this gives the tape something to grip
2. Apply a thin layer of compound along the crack with the 4-inch knife
3. Press mesh tape into the wet compound — smooth from the center outward to remove air bubbles
4. Apply a second thin coat over the tape
5. Let dry 2–4 hours
6. Sand with 120-grit to flatten, finish with 220-grit
7. Check with your hand — if you feel a ridge, apply one more thin coat and sand again
8. Prime and paint

Pro tip: Always apply compound in thin layers. Thick layers take longer to dry, are harder to sand smooth, and are more likely to crack again.

Medium Holes (Quarter to Tennis-Ball Size)

For holes bigger than a quarter but smaller than a fist, you need a proper patch.

What you need: Drywall patch kit (or cut your own patch from spare drywall), joint compound, mesh tape, putty knives, sandpaper

Steps:

1. Cut a square around the hole — make the edges perpendicular, not angled
2. Cut a patch piece slightly larger than the hole (about 1 inch wider on all sides)
3. Press the patch over the hole
4. Apply mesh tape over the seams
5. Cover with thin compound — embed the tape
6. Let dry overnight
7. Sand smooth
8. Check for ridges — add another thin coat if needed
9. Sand, prime, paint

Large Holes (Bigger Than a Fist)

For holes larger than a tennis ball, you need a proper drywall patch or a section replacement.

Option A — Fan Patch:

• Cut a large piece of drywall to match the hole shape (add 2 inches margin)
• Trace the patch onto the wall, cut out the damaged area
• Fit the patch from behind (remove any insulation blocking access if possible)
• Screw into the studs on all sides
• Tape seams, compound, sand in the usual way
• Multiple thin coats, sanding between

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Too much compound in one pass — thick layers crack, shrink, and take forever to dry
• Skipping the primer — spackled areas absorb paint differently; always prime patches
• Sanding before it is fully dry — wet spackle sands poorly and clogs sandpaper
• Ignoring the crack under the patch — if the crack caused the hole, fix the crack first or the hole will reopen
